March might have arrived but it definitely hasn’t brought with it the first signs of Spring. The winter wonderland that has swept over the country the last few weeks, provides the perfect excuse to continue to take pleasure in the comfort, simplicity & uncomplicated nature of Hygge.
As a Wedding Stylist & Designer, a winter wedding & Hygge are a natural combination. The Hygge philosophy of creating wonderful, memorable moments, capturing the love & intimacy shared between family & friends is the essence of marriage.
In designing a wedding, all the senses need to be evoked, encompassed in subtle ways throughout the celebration. A Hygge style winter wedding lends itself naturally by including lots of textures, warming scents, ambient lighting, conversation, & nourishing tastes.
Hygge encourages going back to basics.
In terms of a venue, think rustic, bringing nature & the outdoors in. Locations such as barns or glass greenhouses create a cosy environment that allows you to snuggle away from the cold outside.
Not to say that the outside cannot be used, by providing baskets with chunky knits, faux fur blankets decorating outdoor chairs, positioned around a fire pit creates a romantic outdoor space.
Wild, seasonal foliage & blooms arranged in loose, wild bunches compliments this type of venue perfectly, to create a natural, whimsical look.
Blue toned foliage such as white asparagus fern & eucalyptus work so well with warmer berry toned flowers such as roses. hydrangeas & berries.
Atmospheric, yet delicate lighting built up through the use of candles, fairy lights and lanterns create a warm ambience & mood. The flickering glow of a sole candle can itself evoke feelings of well-being. Placing large pillar candles & lanterns at the entrance to the venue gives a warm welcome to guests.
Hygge is about appreciating the time spent with friends & family, about valuing relationships & savouring time spent together in relaxed, casual conversation. The dining experience for guests should convey this, by placing long wooden tables running down the length of the venue, dressed with delicate vases of pretty handpicked flowers.
A wedding should be an occasion that brings everyone together, incorporating sharing platters & bowls into the menu that can be positioned along the table, encouraging conversation & interaction.
Menu choices should be warming, nourishing & comforting, chosen according to the season & meaningful to the love story of the couple.
Drinks again should be warming, it’s a good excuse to keep the Mulled Wine flowing beyond Christmas, & even to indulge in Hot Chocolate!
