Some Bunny is One

Last month, I shared my top tips for hosting the perfect party at home. I also promised the big reveal for the party I was planning for my daughter’s first birthday which the lovely Claire Graham of Coco Lane photographed. And with that, I take great pleasure in sharing the details, prep and pretty with you.


When it came to choosing a theme for Aurora’s birthday, I originally had a few ideas in mind, but my husband convinced me that they were too “advanced” for a first birthday and to save them for when she is a little older. { Rolly eyes } So I was back to the drawing board, but we very quickly agreed a “Bunny” theme was the most obvious idea, as our little girl has not only collected an extraordinary amount of bunny paraphernalia and bunny themed clothing over her first year, but we also happen to call her “Bunny” as a nickname. With that, my “advanced ideas” remain secret for now, and although I would like Aurora to stop growing up so quickly, I do look forward to indulging in my other creative party ideas in future.

Our dining room in our home was the perfect room to host the party. It provided the perfect blank canvas for us to personalise, and it has the added benefit of having double doors which open onto the garden as the day got warmer which guests could enjoy.


I had beautiful watercolour invitations printed with an illustrated bunny wearing a flower crown in blues, purples and pinks. This set the tone for the décor details for the dining room. I envisaged a garden feel with lots of greens, grass and potted flowers and plants. As a statement piece, I was also keen to have a beautiful wreath hanging from the ceiling behind the birthday cake, with lots of loose, trailing foliage and beautiful roses and hydrangea to match the invitations.

I had also put together a monthly milestone banner with photos of Aurora for us to reminisce over her first year, which created quite the talking point amongst friends and family. I also created a pink flower crown for her giant Jellycat bunny, which was actually gifted to my husband and I when we first announced our pregnancy to family.


Something I really enjoy doing - when I’m not planning weddings and parties or being mum / wife - is to bake. I enjoy the creative side of baking as well as the science behind it. Aurora’s first birthday gave me the opportunity to indulge in my baking pastime, so I went all out and made an assortment of sweet delights for the dessert table. These included iced “bunny” and “Hop Hop Hooray” lemon biscuits, mini cakes iced with pink buttercream and topped with edible flowers, decadent chocolate brownie bites, raspberry macarons and lemon mousse pots served with honeycomb, raspberry jelly and a passion fruit coulis pipette.


Although I had fun baking the bite size sweets, I knew exactly who I wanted to make Aurora’s birthday cake. Blushing Cook makes the most exquisite floral cakes, which I knew would be perfect for our theme. She made us the lightest Victoria sponge which was tinted a pale pink with the yummiest buttercream coating, adorned with the prettiest flowers. To finish off the cake, I had some sparkly Swarovski crystal bunny ears as a cake topper. It was quite the showstopper, and everyone thought it was delicious { It’s so important to have a cake that tastes as good as it looks! }


We also served an assortment of nine different savoury canapés which I had fun presenting. Being an event planner, I simply cannot serve food plainly on a serving dish. For example, we served mini toad in the hole in a long silver bowl which I lined with grass, chicken satay skewers sat in a hay bale, and deep fried mozzarella sticks were served in tall shot glasses with a pipette of sweet chili. Our guests loved the drama and theatre of the canapé presentation. One of the canapé options that really got everyone talking was the “Vegetable Patch” crudité of carrots and radish served in a small terracotta plant pot filled with red pepper hummus, topped with pumpernickel crumb “soil”. I think any bunny would approve ;)

Our guests enjoyed the afternoon sipping Laurent Perrier champagne as well as Elderflower and Rose Presse and Cucumber and Mint lemonade as non alcoholic alternatives. The drinks station gave guests the opportunity to personalise and garnish their bubbles or soft drinks with fresh fruit and mint. Without my knowledge, my husband also bought some “bunny-inspired” craft ales and beers which earned him serious brownie points for being “on theme”.


Aurora had such a wonderful afternoon. She was so happy to see our friends and family, which filled us with so much joy. I will never forget her happy face as she indulged in bunny biscuits and cake, played in her new ball pool and stood on her own for the first time as she tried to catch the bubbles from the bubble machine. We will treasure memories of her first birthday forever.

Having originally hailed from South Africa, I moved to the UK in 1999 where I now live with my husband, young daughter and three dogs. When I’m not planning weddings and events I love to bake and enjoy the delights of London’s finest afternoon tea establishments. {Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?!} 

I draw a lot of influence from emerging interior design trends, fashion, travel and exhibitions. And if asked to describe my style, I would say it’s feminine and modern with classic undertones. I love the stylish foundation of something classic or traditional and layering it with something a bit bold or contemporary – whether it’s in my home or what I wear. For example, I love a feminine black dress, but will add a statement necklace or a bright jacket or scarf for personality. I also have an obsession with grey.
