The Scandinavian word Hygge (pronounced Hoo-ga) is an important part of being Danish, almost a definitive feature of their identity, that requires consciousness, a certain amount of slowness, & the ability to not just be in the present but to enjoy the present for what it is at that moment. Daily activities (particularly in the Autumn & Winter) become rituals which take place without thinking & which are carried out & appreciated as ‘an art form’.
It’s about allowing yourself the guilty pleasure of indulging in what you enjoy, the cosy contentment of being able to wrap yourself up in a luxurious blanket with a good book, or sit down with a cup of coffee, of consciously spending time with others & appreciating their company.
“Time spent with others creates an atmosphere that is warm, relaxed, friendly, down-to-earth, close, comfortable, snug, and welcoming. In many ways, it is like a good hug, but without the physical contact. It is in this situation that you can be completely relaxed and yourself. The art of hygge is therefore also the art of expanding your comfort zone to include other people.”
Hygge is not simply a state of mind but is reflected in the home by creating an atmosphere that radiates ‘I love to live here’ & ‘I feel at home here & please come & feel at home together with me’.
The indoor environment exudes less is more. Think oodles of candlelight to create a soft, warm glow, which teamed with fairy lights cannot be replicated by artificial light. A subtle, neutral colour scheme encourages a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere which when put together with layers of texture through different natural fabrics & materials gives a cosy feel.
Imagine, an evening spent surrounded by friends, great food, wine, listening to relaxing music, drenched in candlelight – bliss!
Hygge encompasses and promotes a lifestyle that takes pleasure in the simple things in life – friendship, kindness, love, intimacy, creating feelings of true, natural being. Feelings that lead to contentedness, security & devotion, which without question form the basis of any relationship.
Well-being, contentment, acknowledging a feeling or moment, turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. Elements that as a Wedding Stylist & Designer become an integral part of your involvement with each & every couple, & an honour as you become involved in their love story.
