Hey lovelies! What a weekend it’s been. As I write, I have to unashamedly say I spent most of yesterday watching the Royal Wedding. Who else watched it and how did you celebrate? I thought it was just magical! From the dress to the flowers to the location to the hotels the night before (have I mentioned I used to work as the Wedding Co-ordinator at Cliveden…oh yes, Meghan will have had the best night before hand!) I was in my absolute wedding element. I prepared some sandwiches, Pimms and Fortnum’s Royal Blend tea and was glued to the TV. I also happened to be social media stalking too (just to get my fill of pics and coverage) and was quite simply loving life! I’m so privileged to work within the wedding industry and know some amazing colleagues that pull out the stops on a weekly basis, so I just want to give a small shout out to those superstar suppliers. Whilst following all the build-up and goings on, I thought I would do a couple of wedding features, so next week I will focus a little on flowers…because you know I’m a floral fiend…and this week I will focus on my other love…food.
From watching the coverage and in the lead up to the big day, one of the details given was that Harry and Meghan were having Bowl Food for their wedding food choice. Now over the past few years and given my background as Wedding and Events Manager for a catering and events company I have written my fair share of tips and advice on wedding food and drink; there is so much to cover and perhaps I will get round to do a proper feature on all of the different options…because there really is endless options. For me, any choices in weddings should be personal and it’s about what you love as a couple. So if you’re about the informal food choice and mingling is important to you, then like Harry and Meghan, bowl food maybe the right choice for you.
So what is Bowl Food? Well, think small bowls of your favourite dishes, warm or chilled which are circulated around your guests to tuck into and enjoy. They could be bigger versions of canapés and smaller individual dishes of your favourite buffet style foods. You could choose 4-6 different options too, which provide the perfect way of catering for all different preferences or dietary requirements. It also allows an extended reception time for you and your guests to relax and get round and mingle with all invited. The only thing I would advise is to make sure you still have some tables or poseur tables to allow people to place drinks on whilst eating or empty bowls on so catering staff can collect.
The informal wedding food trend is definitely here to stay and bowl food in particular seems to have extended in popularity, not just because the Royals had it, though I’m sure that we may see more of this in the future months because it was the choice of Harry and Meghan. I’m all for the informal trend and think it provides choice, flexibility and allows you to really let your personality shine through within your choices.
Some of my favourites are a risotto, a curry, posh fish & chips, Buddha bowls, chilli and for sweet options an Eton Mess. You can be creative as you like and it’s always worth discussing with your chosen caterers the option of bowl food and if you can create a more bespoke version of the dishes they offer. If you’re indecisive like me or just LOVE food, then bowl food could be the go to choice for your wedding food. I would love to know what you chose or what you would choose for your wedding food and if bowl food, which delicious dishes? Go on, make me hungry!
