Tell us about your business:
I love the creative freedom and control I have over my own work and the variety of things I get to work on as a calligrapher from wedding stationery and personalised gifts to artwork for printed goods and signs for shops and certificates.
What is your workflow process:
I start off with the wording from the client and any specifics they require. Then we discuss what styles they are interested in - old English or classic copperplate to modern relaxed styles of lettering, and then I draw up some examples of what it could look like. Then the colours and papers are sampled and finally, I write. I also work closely with a local printer who does screen printing, digital and foil blocking.
What kind of clients do you work with?:
My clients range from traditional couples looking for wedding stationery and personalised pieces to people who need something that's not easy to find such as a eulogy to a horse and a map of a make-believe world… Anyone who appreciates the handwritten form really.
Where do you find inspiration?:
I get a lot from nature - I am a keen gardener and it is where I clear my head and relax. Doing tasks like digging and weeding really help new ideas evolve. That and a good stomp around the fields.
Looking through old postcards and diaries is also fascinating, I really enjoy learning new letter forms from old texts.
What challenges have you set yourself for the next 12 months?:
To do more! I very much am a creative who starts on one thing and it ends up leading to something totally different. So being better at finishing experimental projects… and hopefully writing some more pieces that end up as treasured items to my clients.
My background is as a wedding & lifestyle photographer, shooting both digital and film to create authentic, soft and natural fine art photographs. Working primarily with natural light to give my work a beautiful, light and airy touch infused with soft tones.
I have always appreciated and valued the simple things in life and finding the interesting in the ordinary. Coco Lane was founded as I wanted to create something that is about an experience, the slower pace of life, cosiness and candlelight, cuddling up on the sofa with loved ones, being with the people you love, sharing food with close friends, a feeling of home, nurturing a chosen career, wanderlust travels, savouring the small moments in everyday life and just being you and enjoying a cup of tea.
I'm excited to bring you stories that promote all those moments in life that give us value and meaning; inspiring us to live beautifully.
"I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. If you are interested in something, no matter what it is. Go at it full speed. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it, and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good" - Roald Dahl
